Collage / Southern Houses and Landscapes

The house collages are inspired by the old houses I see as I walk through my the oldest neighborhoods of my hometown on my annual visits there. I love these old places, with all their charming and sometimes quirky touches.

As I cut papers to make my House Party collages, scraps of paper fall to the floor in an amazing array of shapes. The works in this series are made exclusively from those scraps; they readily fall into place as strange but familiar imaginary scenes that recall ubiquitous forms found in the southern landscape -- churches, steeples, barns, silos, warehouses, lopsided sheds, sagging old houses, gravestones, fences, and kudzu-covered structures and woodlands. All my life, I have carried inside a sense of these forms floating around in an elusive interior landscape. These collages tap into that world and are a way, at last, that I have found to make it visible through my work.
